Carl Maria von Weber composed a number of pioneering works for the operatic stage as well as incidental music whose highly attractive scores combine Classical principles of clarity with a unique lyricism and orchestral mastery that would inspire later Romantic composers. This disc presents overtures from his ever-popular Der Freischütz, Euryanthe and Oberon, as well as from other undeservedly lesser-known operatic works, alongside concert pieces such as the Jubel-Ouvertüre and Der Beherrscher der Geister, and the incidental music for the plays Preciosa and Turandot, all of which amply display his vivid and refined dramatic imagination.

The bass trombone has a wonderfully rich tone and sonorous depth yet is rarely featured as a solo instrument. The four remarkable works on this disc, all but one composed for Yves Bauer, bass trombone soloist of the Lille National Orchestra, explore the instrument’s technical and expressive range. Vertiges is a concerto in the form of a theme and variations with an array of dizzyingly contrasting moods. Etoile des profondeurs takes inspiration from jazz and popular music. The title Deux Marches d’écart is a pun on the composer’s name (Marc Steckar), while the thrilling Concerto for Bass Trombone and Wind Ensemble is by turns playful, lyrical and heroically virtuosic.

While the beloved Valse triste and Scene with Cranes from Kuolema are virtually signature tunes for the great Finnish composer, much of Sibelius’ orchestral and theatrical music remains undeservedly less familiar. From the incidental music for the play Belshazzar’s Feast Sibelius drew four richly scored orientalist movements. The tone poems Pan and Echo and Night Ride and Sunrise respectively evoke the world of ancient myth and a nocturnal journey towards a Nordic dawn. A lilting waltz dances at the heart of the impressionistic The Dryad, while castanets enliven the light-hearted mood of the Tanz-Intermezzo, Op. 45 No. 2.

Anton Bruckner’s String Quintet in F major was composed at the suggestion of the famous Viennese violinist Joseph Hellmesberger. Contemporaneous with his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies, it is a deftly written Romantic work, symphonic in scale but intimate in character, whose Adagio expresses an almost unbearable bliss. Composed in 1862, though rediscovered only decades after his death, the String Quartet in C minor brings into play Bruckner’s love of Bach and admiration for Schubert while pointing towards his own later symphonic style.

In perfecting the newly developing form of the Italian solo concerto, Vivaldi wrote nearly five hundred concertos, of which 39 are for bassoon with strings and continuo. In these, Vivaldi exploits the full expressive and tonal range of the solo instrument, often making considerable demands on the soloist’s virtuosity to thrilling effect. This album celebrates the centenary of the birth of Geirr Tveitt, an important figure in Norwegian music, many of whose scores perished when his house burned to the ground in 1970. A student of Nadia Boulanger, and influenced by Bartók, Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky, Tveitt drew deeply from Norwegian folk music, particularly from the Hardanger district, to develop a refined and lyrical personal style that gained favour both internationally and in his homeland. This first complete edition of Tveitt’s compositions for wind instruments also includes Stig Nordhagen’s transcription of nine movements from the suites A Hundred Hardanger Tunes.
