"Rashomon" is considered by many as one of Akira Kurosawa's best films. The original screenplay for the film was penned by Shinobu Hashimoto, based on the story "Yabu no Naka (In a Grove)" by Ryunosuke Akutagawa. Then the director himself completed the screenplay by adding elements from another story by the same author named "Rashomon." He had already made such popular films as "Sugata Sanshiro" and "Yoidore Tenshi (Drunken Angel)", but this remarkable film put his name on the international map. It stars Toshiro Mifune and Takashi Shimura (both from "The Seven Samurai"). Brilliant cinematographer Kazuo Miyagawa became the first Japanese D.P. to shoot a film within a forrest. Miyagawa also worked with Kurosawa on "Yojimbo," and "Kagemusha" and died in 1999, nearly a year after the death of the director himself. An 8-page booklet included. Sergio Leone's remake of Akira Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" is notable for many things. First for making Clint Eastwood an international star. Secondly for being the progenitor of the Spaghetti Western genre itself. And thirdly as the first installment in the best known Western trilogy (the "dollars, or man-with-no-name" trilogy.) I remember stating an analogy between Leone's westerns and the first two of George Miller's Mad Max series before. George Miller once stated to the effect that "Mad Max" presented him a perfect learning experience as a director, while his true vision only came to life with the second film ("Mad Max II (The Road Warrior)." While "FIstful" already looks quite an achievement, for Leone, it was probably a mere first step to pave the way closer to the realization of his vision, which came to perfection with "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly," as far as the trilogy was concerned.

Boxed DVD set of the two "Conan" movies starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Based on the pulp fantasy by Robert E. Howard, director John Milius and his co-writer Oliver Stone chose to make a non-camp, classy Conan movie, and the result was the hit film, "Conan the Barbarian". The photography and some of the action sequences are even reminiscent of Akira Kurosawa films, and the overall production design is heavily influenced by Frank Frazetta, the legendary graphic artist. Arnie's veteran co-stars include James Earl Jones, Max von Sydow, Mako, and William Smith as Conan's father. The film also features a great score by Basil Poledouris ("RoboCop"). Richard Fleischer's sequel "Conan the Destroyer" is considerably campier in comparison to the original but it's still a very entertaining action adventure. Mako returns as Conan's sidekick, and Grace Jones, Olivia d'Abo, and Wilt Chamberlain co-star. Jones in particular is a hoot to watch.
