Ah, to hear the Faure Requiem performed with a chamber orchestra and a sublime boys choir … Such velvet tones are the things of which dreams are made. Bravo, Connor Burrowes, for taking on the roles of both conductor and baritone soloist - a step towards the future in many ways. After the BAC “Requiem” release in 1997, it was very refreshing to hear Connor’s pre-recorded 1996 treble voice dubbed over a live accompaniment for the Sanctus, Pie Jesu, and In Paradisum movements, reminiscent of Enrico Caruso’s voice being dubbed over the Vienna Radio Symphony in 2000, but with the added bonus of original digital vocal recordings. There is a beautiful balance between orchestra and choir throughout the entire recording, and the addition of Mozart’s “Ave Verum Corpus” is a welcome one to continue the rich and lush atmosphere created by the Faure. This is a disc of genuine fullness and beauty.

An ethereal delight! "Blue Bird" is a breath of fresh air from a choir whose true talent had yet to be captured in the studio. Each selection is, in its own right, otherworldly. The use of studio reverb creates a sense of being in a stained-glass-window-adorned cathedral. The repertoire is beautifully chosen, and the accompaniment is very tasteful and complimentary. It does not overpower but provides the necessary emotional tension to reach the listener's soul. Though there is the innocence that so often comes with the sound of a boys choir, there is also a maturity in their sound and an understanding of harmonies, blend and balance far beyond their young years. The a-capella "Miserere" of Allegri is the quintessential track of this CD for me. Edward Burrowes' high C is brilliantly placed, clear as crystal, leaving one spellbound.

My first introduction to the BAC was their debut release entitled "Requiem." Looking past the unfortunate use of electronic accompaniment (minus the live cello and harp on two of the tracks), Connor Burrowes' voice had me mesmerized. His selective use of vibrato is tasteful, and his high-register tone has a simple purity serving as a vehicle of heavenward transport. This is most definitely a relaxation CD, one of those that can be set at one volume and left untouched for the duration. The two unaccompanied tracks are the two highlights for me on this disc - Faure's "In Paradisium" and Britten's "Kyrie" - allowing me to experience the choir uninterrupted by synthesized strings. In actuality, this CD should have been a solo disc for Connor Burrowes featuring the BAC, but for the elegance of his voice, I can choose to overlook any production oversight.
